Cabinet Painting FAQ

If my cabinets are in good shape, solid condition but are dated, what are my options?

This is a very common challenge for home owners. Going for a lighter option for cabinet colors is becoming more common. The question is do you go with the more expensive choice with involves replacing the cabinets completely, or do you go with cabinet refinishing? We believe the answer rests in your budget. If you truly like your current cabinets but they just need a new color, then cabinet painting is probably your best choice. But if you have the budget and would like a completely new style and shape of cabinetry, then replacing what you have may be the best way to go.

How much does cabinet painting cost?

The main factors behind the cost of your cabinet refinishing project are hoe many drawes and doors need painting, hardware replacement, and how much damage restoration will be required. Obviously the more doors and frames need painting the more work is required. Another factor that drives cost is how simple or difficult it will be to replace the hardward of your cabinets and drawers. If the existing holes for the connecting screws are in good shape and it does not take long to replace the materials then the time is less. Lastly, when we repaint your cabinets we also address any minor nicks and scratchs that may exist in the materials. Patching those takes time, but the less fixing there is to do the less cost. All that being said, kitchen cabinet painting costs are typically at least half the cost of new cabinet installation packages.

Can I paint my kitchen cabinets myself?

The answer to this question is quite simply "yes". While many painting jobs can be done by homeowners, it’s really a question of capability. If you feel you can do a professional level job of painting cabinets, then why not save the money and do it yourself. On the other hand, if you're unsure of how to prepare the surface of the cabinets, apply the coats of paint and what pitfalls to avoid during the process, it could be better to allow a professional like us to take care of all the messy work for you.

What does cabinet painting involve?

While each kitchen needs to be evaluated individually, the process generally would be done in these steps:

  1. The cabinet surfaces are washed, if needed, to remove any grease or dirt build-up.
  2. All cabinet doors, hardware and hinges are carefully removed.
  3. The cabinets are sanded and dusted to remove any coating and sealants. If there are dents or scratches on the surface we repair them.
  4. We spray a primer coat onto the cabinets.
  5. The next step is to apply a split-coat mix of primer and finish enamel.
  6. A final coat of enamel is then applied to the cabinet bases. An additional fourth coat may be applied to doors and drawers, as these areas have more wear and tear.

Do I have to empty everything out of the cabinets?

If you want to have the inside painted, yes, they would have to be emptied. Otherwise, you can leave everything inside and the interior of the cabinets can be sealed off with plastic, or the cabinet bases can be painted by hand, with the doors painted separately.

What kind of paint should be used to paint cabinets?

The best type of paint to use are oil and acrylic primers and enamels. We always choose quality products for the projects we work on because we know they will last and give you the final look you're going for. In some cases, solid-colored lacquers may be used, especially if the cabinets are brand new.
